Welcome to the Discovery Scanning Website
The Hammersmith Hospital and Queen Charlotte’s Hospital have been at the forefront of pioneering medical research and of innovative neonatal care for over five decades. We believe that research is essential for delivering high quality care to babies now and in the future.
Our goal is to learn more about the causes and consequences of brain injury in newborn babies (resulting from premature birth or oxygen deprivation around the time of delivery for example), so that we can identify ways to reduce the number of children who go on to have neurodevelopmental problems caused by complications around the time of birth.
The cornerstone of our research programme is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This is a way of taking detailed pictures of the brain and other organs. It is safe. We are unique in having a state of the art MRI scanner situated on the neonatal unit, and we have established a world-renowned programme of research on early brain development using MRI which dates back over 15 years.
We thank you for visiting this site and hope that the information provided here will help you to decide whether or not you wish to contribute to our research programme.
You can find further information about the academic bodies that support our research at websites of the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre and Imaging Sciences Department, Imperial College London.
